Ten drag artists hit the streets of Athens in this urgent and moving documentary

Avant Drag! is a portrait of ten drag artists of diverse gender expressions and sexual orientations. Together they traverse the streets of Athens in order to question social structures. Their wild characters (from rebelling housewife to Albanian turbo folk girl) act in revolutionary ways, thus claiming justice and targeting conservatism, patriarchy, patriottism, racism and sexism.

This film is part of Queer Festival Haarlem and will be introduced by Renske Diks, film connaisseur and programmer. Renske is also an anthropologist and photographer, having published her book 'Queens of Beirut,' about Lebanese drag queens, in 2023.

After the screening we invite you to our bar for an aftertalk with McMorait.

McMorait is a drag performer that was active in the underground queer and anarchist scene of Thessaloniki for the past 6 years, organising events, participating in political discussions and protests, aiming to create real communities and safe spaces in a city where radical orthodox christians and neo-fascists were constantly taking up space. Their main inspiration comes from the horror of everyday life, punk music and revolting mood. Now, they live in Leiden, where they study Urban Biodiversity as a PhD candidate, while they're still active in queer organisations and groups. The talk will be in English.
