Documentaire – Mati Diop
Expat Cinema: Dahomey
The journey of plundered treasures from the Kingdom of Dahomey being returned from Paris to Benin.
In the 19th century, hundreds of historical and cultural artifacts were looted from the West African kingdom of Dahomey by French colonial forces. In November 2021, 26 of these treasures are set to leave Paris and return to their country of origin, the present-day Republic of Benin. But how do you relate to the treasures of your ancestors in a country that has changed so much during their absence? The students of Benin engage in dialogue, striving to find a place for the past in the present.
Dahomey is a unique documentary about the restitution of cultural heritage, decolonization, and traditions. The film intertwines poetry, politics, and aesthetics, offering a surprising perspective on these contemporary themes. Winner of the Golden Bear (Best Film) at the Berlin Film Festival.
