The lunchtime rush in the kitchen of a NYC restaurant, where cultures from all over the world blend
The Grill is a busy eatery in Times Square where a regular Friday sees over five thousands guests served. Among the kitchen staff dreams and despair are in quick rotation, while each employee chases their own American dream. One day a young Mexican chef, Pedro, is accused of stealing money from the till. He is involved with waitress Julia, an American waitress struggling with her own duties in life. Pedro's world collapses when he hears Julia is planning an abortion. These developments combined with his constant stress reach a boiling point, damaging the kitchen's vulnerable choreography.
La Cocina is a social-realist drama and a tribute to the unseen heroes who work in kitchens. It conveys the hectic reality of a busy kitchen while also shining a light on the lives of labour immigrants. Based on Arnold Wesler's 1957 play The Kitchen.
