Expat Cinema: My Favourite Cake
Old people find new love and share subversion in this Iranian gem.
Mahin (70) lives alone in Teheran, ever since her husband has died and her daughter has left for Europe. Inspired by a chat with her friends she decides to break out of her lonely routine and revive her love life. While searching a new man she revisits places from her past and contemplates her years happily spent in freedom.
In a restaurant she meets Faramarz, a modest en kind single man of her own age. He is a taxi driver and veteran who shares Mahin's independent spirit: once he got into trouble with the authorities just for making music. Mahin invites himto her apartment so she can bake him her favourite cake. It will turn out to be a surprising and unforgettable night.
My Favourite Cake premiered at the Berlin film festival, where it won two awards. Directors Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha were unable to attend the ceremony, because the Iranian regime forbade them to.
