Feminist and delicate film about an extraordinary woman, based on the real life story of 'bearded lady' Clementine Delait.

In a small French community in 1870 Rosalie is about to marry Abel, a bar owner crippled by debts. The young woman lives with a secret that overshadows her existence: since birth she's had massive amounts of body hair. In order to be able to marry her off, her father has saved up a sizeable dowry. Abel marries Rosalie for this money, ignorant about her physical abnormalities. Their wedding night is a failure: Abel is repulsed by Rosalie while she wishes nothing more that to remain married an to have a child. She decides to grow a beard in order to draw curious paying crowds to Abel's bar. The villagers grow to love Rosalie, while Abel deals with a growing fear of being rejected. A factory accident changes the mood and Rosalie will have to remain steadfast amongst a storm of negativity and threats.
