Expat Cinema: Tatami

Political thriller about a female Iranian judoka who is pressured by her country's regime to leave a tournament.

Judoka Leila and her coach Maryam attend the judo world championships with hopes of bringing the gold medal home to Iran. Leila is well prepared and has a real shot at the title. However, once the Iranian regime discovers that Leila might face an Israeli opponent they pressure her to abandon the tournament. Once her own safety and that of her family are at risk, Leila faces an impossible decision. Will she bend to her government's will or will she proceed with her plan to win?

Tatami is the first feature film co-directed by an Iranian and an Israeili filmmaker. It won the BRIAN award at the Venice film festival, an award which supports the values of freedom of speech, human rights and democracy.
