TOBAN, the latest masterpiece crafted by choreographer Mohamed Yusuf Boss under the banner of X_YUSUF_BOSS, guides you through the intricate layers of opportunity inequality.
TOBAN delves into the notion that one can always aspire to be whoever they choose, yet external forces may curtail and mold this aspiration. As the venerable James Baldwin famously proclaimed, "You have to decide who you are and compel the world to deal with you, not its conception of you."
TOBAN commenced as an in-depth exploration of the personal narratives of Mohamed, the performers, and all the youth participants in the HIDDEN project. These narratives, gathered through exchanges between Groningen and Katlehong in South Africa, serve as the emotional core of TOBAN: "Through dance, our aim is to allow the audience to experience the emotional strata of inequality, share insights that defy verbal expression, and foster a heightened awareness of both our own standing and that of others," affirms Mohamed.
